2014 marks our 45th anniversary of our business serving the York, PA area. In 1969, George W. Ream moved his wife and two children from Milton, PA to York.
George started his first business at Ream’s Mobil Station located on Carlisle Avenue, across from where Metro Bank and Target are currently located. The Mobil Station closed in 1979. In 1980, George opened Ream’s Garage on the corner of Carlisle Avenue and Brougher Lane where Sheetz currently resides. In 1982 George started collecting and selling good used tires from local businesses. This became the beginning of tire sales. Ream’s Garage became A-1 Tire in 1984, selling used and new tires.
In 1988, George relocated the tire shop to our current location, 3333 West Market Street. In 1994 , George purchased the old Pfaltzgraff building and land, known to some as Pottery Hill, adjacent to the tire shop looking to grow and expand the business. In September of 1999 he expanded the business to include storage, approximately 300 units. A-1 Tire became A-1 Tire & Storage Co. Inc.
In June 2004, after extensive renovations, George opened A-1 Laundromat in the old Pfaltzgraff building. The Laundromat earned awards in 2004 from Maytag and Coin Laundry. A-1 Laundromat is one of the biggest and nicest laundromats in the area, offering over 36 washers, 16 of which are large capacity, and 32 dryers.
In April 2010, A-1 Tire & Storage expanded to include U-Haul. Adding U-Haul to the business allows current storage customers the availability of moving trucks. It also allows people who are moving, a singular place to store items, rent and/or drop off a moving truck.
Owner George W. Ream passed away in July of 2013, leaving the business to his son David W. Ream. A-1 will continue to be a family run business which sells used and new tires, offer storage and truck rentals, and laundromat services. George Ream and his family have offered services for 45 years. David Ream and his son, Kurt Ream, hope to offer services to York for another 45 years.
Thank you for doing business with us!
